NEW DELHI, MARCH 10—In a mocking remark, poll strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor said on Tuesday that political success of Jyotiraditya Scindia was owing to his family name of “Scindia”, otherwise hae had little contribution as a “mass leader, political organiser or an administrator”.

In a tweet, Kishor said, "Amazing that those who usually find fault with Gandhis leading Congress because of their surname are finding a Scindia leaving the Congress as big jolt for the party! Fact is but for his surname even Jyotiraditya Scindia has little to show as mass leader, political organiser or administrator," Mr Kishor tweeted.

Jyotiradtiya was expelled from the Congress due to “anti-party activities”, soon after he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday.

Jyotiradtiya hails from the erstwhile ruling family of Gwalior.

His grandmother Vijayraje Scindia was a BJP MP. His father Madhavrao Scindia was in the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and joined the Congress later on. Madhavrao died in a plane crash in September 2001. Congress, which was in power at the time at the Centre, named a road in Lutyen’s Delhi after Madhavrao.

Jyotiraditya, who was 30 years old at the time and studying in Oxford University, returned to join politics. He contested from the family stronghold of Guna in by-poll and won.  In 2004, he retained the Guna seat and became Union Minister of State for Information Technology in the UPA-I government. He was re-elected for a third consecutive term in Lok Sabha in 2009 and became Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. He again won Lok Sabha polls in 2014. However, he lost Lok Sabha elections in 2019 to BJP’s Krishna Pal Singh Yadav.

His aunt Vasundhararaje Scindia has been Rajasthan Chief Minister. His another aunt Yashodhararaje is a BJP MLA in Madhya Pradesh.

After Jyotiraditya met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, Yashodhararaje said, “it is in national interest” and “ghar wapasi”(homecoming).

Jyotiraditya is scheduled to join BJP at the BJp headquarters in New Delhi today evening.

21 Congress MLAs have resigned from the Madhya Pradesh assembly and are set to join the BJP.

Mr Scindia may get a Rajya Sabha seat from the BJP, sources say.

NEW DELHI, MARCH 10The number of MLAs having quit the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh has risen to 20, resulting into a big crisis in the party in the state after the rebel Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia met Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning.

Scindia is likely to join BJP at BJP headquarters in Delhi today evening.

Sources said that five more Congress MLAs are expected to resign by this evening. As many as 17 rebel MLAs were flown to Bengaluru and are sheltered in a hotel there.

But even if the resignations of 20 rebel Congress MLAs are accepted, one and a half year old Kamal Nath government will come into minority as it was having the support of only 120 MLAs - 114 of the Congress and the remaining from Samajwadi Party, BSP and Independents.

In a house of 230 MLAs, a party requires a minimum of 116 MLAs in its support to form the government. As BJP is having 107 MLAs in the House, it can easily form the government with the support of rebel MLAs.

According to sources, Scindia is likely to be fielded as BJP’s priority candidate for Rajya Sabha elections in the state to be held shortly. Scindia’s victory is said to be certain with BJP having 107 MLAs and 20 Congress MLAs resigning from the House.

Sources say that Scindia will be inducted into the cabinet after his election to Rajya Sabha.
