BENGALURU, AUGUST 9—The demand seeking action against the national president of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Dr. Subbiah Shanmugam has reached Delhi, with leaders of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) affiliated to the Congress, submitting memorandum to Union Textile Minister Smriti Irani and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
ABVP is the students wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh(RSS), the political mentor of the BJP.
Subbiah is a professor and Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at Kilpauk Medical College and Government Royapettah Hospital in Chennai and is accused of harassing an elderly woman in Chennai.
NSUI members took out a cycle rally led by its general secretary Nagesh Kariyappa in New Delhi and marched to the offices of the two ministers. They submitted a memorandum seeking speedy justice to the 62-year-old woman.
Earlier, the state NSUI had complained to the Tamil Nadu State Health Secretary J. Radhakrishnan, seeking action against Subbiah.
The NSUI state president N. Aswathaman said that Subbiah was employed in government service and yet taking part in political activities of the ABVP, which was violation of service rules.
The case came to prominence after family of the woman alleged that the Chennai police refused to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the ABVP leader. Meanwhile, Dr. Subbiah has told mediapersons that the complaint against him was “false”.
According to details, the widow living alone in an apartment in Chennai city had, in a police complaint, accused Subbiah of harassment, including “urinating and throwing used surgical masks at her doorstep”. She had filed the complaint at the Adambakkam Police Station on July 11 and had also attached the CCTV footage and photos, showing Subbiah at her doorsteps.
The dispute between the two arose over use of parking slots belonging to the elderly women in the society. According to woman’s complaint, Subbiah had contacted her for permission to use one of her parking slots. But when she demanded rent for its use, he was angry. Besides breaking the signboard at the parking slot, he also threw filth and garbage at her flat’s doorstep.
