Moradabad: Why the Locals Pelted Stones on Doctors?
Stone Pelting on doctors in Muradabad on April 15

Local people, when asked by India Tomorrow on the reason for the stone-pelting, said that people had resorted to stone pelting on health department staff because they were forcing to quarantine a woman who was in “iddat” after the death of her husband. (“Iddat” in Islam is generally the period of four lunar months and 10 days a woman must observe after the death of her husband or after a divorce).

NEW DELHI, APRIL 17—Why did the people in Moradabad pelted stones on a team of doctors and paramedical staff who had gone to Nawabpur locality to fetch family members a man who had died of COVID-19?

The media, which must carry the views of all the parties involved in an issue, has ignored to mention the version of those who have been accused of the stone pelting.

The reports being published by newspapers, broadcast by TV channels and carried by digital media are giving only one side of the version showing as if the people resorted to stone-pelting simply because they were opposing the quarantining of the family.

The local people alleged that the woman’s husband had died of COVID-19 and that was why the doctors had come to pick her up and other family members.

All family members of the deceased were quarantined after his death except his wife. Locals say they asked the doctors to let her quarantine inside the house as in Islam a woman has to live inside the house for “iddat”period spanning over four months and ten days.

“When doctors insisted to take the woman to the quarantine centre, people in Nawabpur locality under Nagfani police station got angry and pelted stones to force doctors to leave the woman inside her house”, many locals told India Tomorrow.

Perhaps, the locals did not know that the Moradabad administration was watching the scene by a drone. The administration and police took action on the basis of photographs collected from the drone camera.

However, local MP, S. T. Hasan, has a different story to tell. According to him, there was rumour that people in quarantine and those who are COVID-19 positive were being in a common ward. The people were under fear to be infected if they were kept in a common ward. There was also a rumour that quarantine centre had no facility. People were not served proper food. That was why people opposed going to quarantine centre and pelted stone.

He said, “I personally visited the quarantine centre where all facilities were being provided. Quarantine centre was at a distance from the medical ward meant for corona virus positive patients.”

The incident occurred on Wednesday, April 15. State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered the police to book the accused under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) following which a total of 17 persons, including seven women, were arrested for pelting stones on the health workers and police.

Moradabad SP Amit Kumar Anand told mediapersons that a case under relevant sections of IPC has been registered and investigations have been started in the matter. He said that more people involved in the assault on doctors and health workers were being identified with the help CCTV footage and they will be arrested. A total of three persons, including a doctor and a pharmacist, were injured in the stone-pelting on an ambulance carrying health workers and police.

The court was specially opened in the night for the accused. They were produced before the district court at 3 am last night.

The court remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days. They were taken to jail at 5 am.

Sources said that the accused had been quarantined in jail.
