Tazeem Haider | India Tomorrow

New Delhi, March 13—Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) came out with a Peoples’ Manifesto for the upcoming Parliamentary Elections in a press conference held here today. The organization plans to reach out to various political parties and important stakeholders and will urge them to treat it as a ‘Charter of Demands’ to be included in their election manifesto.

While releasing its manifesto JIH said that it reflects genuine feelings of people and invites political parties to ensure better and principled governance.

Some of the very important issues were addressed in the 18 point People’s Manifesto ranging from employment, agriculture, minority rights, implementation of Sacchar Committee recommendations, matters of Wakf properties, interest banking etc.

The Manifesto urged the central government to introduce police reforms, review education policy in order to keep it secular, reform complex taxes like GST and ensure autonomy of various institutions with a major emphasis on the media and urged the government that press council should be ‘given legal powers’ andlegal measures should be taken to check the spread of ‘false news and baseless propaganda’.

Some of the main features of the People’s Manifesto are as follows:

-Protection of all citizens, and in particular weaker sections (such as the poor, women, Muslims and deprived segments) against injustice, aggression, mob violence, state violence and communal bias.

-Muslim Personal Law is increasingly under attack from misguided elements. Religious and cultural identity of Muslims and their cultural rights are being targeted. Specific measures should be taken in this regard to safeguard the Muslims within a constitutional frame work.

-Comprehensive healthy development of all regions and sections, with particular attention to marginalized regions, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, Muslims, rural population and deprived sections.

-Indian Muslims are a deprived lot, it is necessary to provide reservation for them. Hence the Ranganath Mishra Committee’s report should be implemented. Reservation for all minorities should be provided in education and jobs. Among such reserved positions; two third should be marked for Muslims.

-Recommendations made by National police commission should be followed. Comprehensive reformative measures should be initiated to revamp the police. 25 per cent reservation for minorities. Recommendations about police, made by National minority commission should also be implemented.

-Sachar committee recommendations should be implemented in letter and spirit. In welfare schemes, a ‘Muslim component plan’ should be invariably included.

-Interest free banking should be introduced in the banking sector. Dr. Raghu Ram Rajan had headed the subcommittee of planning commission, which had debated financial sector reforms. In accordance with its recommendations, interest free banking activity (based on profit sharing) should be permitted.

While speaking to India Tomorrow, JIH General-Secretary Engineer Mohammad Saleem said, “The responsibility of Election Commission (EC) to develop an environment in which every individual, without any fear, could use the right of vote”. During the question answer session in a Press Conference held by JIH in order to inaugurate the ‘Peoples’ Manifesto’ in Press Club of India.

In response to another question by India Tomorrow regarding the demands of JIH, Saleem said, “We would like to demand to Election Commission that it should keep an eye upon the expenditure of campaigning and there should be a review that neither the politicians nor the political parties exceed the limit set by the law. There should be no use of cash or kind to lure the voters”.

While advocating control over incidences of violence, hatred, rumors through different means of communication especially social media he said, “Election Commission should ensure that there should be full control over spreading haltered, lies, rumors through different means such as social media”.

“We hope that this election will be a fare one. Every individual will be able to avail the right of voting,” he said hoping that the election would be fair.

“We demand the security of every individual. There should be strict legal actions against all those who try to disturb the law and order. But we are observing that there are targeted attacks especially upon Dalit, tribal, Christians and other Minorities including Muslims.” We are consistently demanding a stricter laws to control the incidents of mob violence, mob lynching and spread of hatred,”  he further told a rainbow of media organizations present on the occasion.

In response to a question as to whether JIH will take its ‘Peoples’ Manifesto’ to the BJP, JIH Vice-President Nusrat Ali said, “This ‘Peoples’ Manifesto’ encompasses all the political parties as we want them to ensure the right of people, and our demands are for all.”

“The economy is in hands of the corporate. Poor is becoming poorer day by day and jobs are decreasing in the market. The policies of the government are supporting the corporate He further said that there should be economic policies which increase the employment, there should be focus and special attention upon the agriculture and small scale industries,” said Ali on being asked about the importance of employment in the manifesto.

While replying to a question as to what would be the significance of JIH manifesto for the political parties when they don’t follow their own, Ali said, “Once the general public and social organization prove their awareness then only the political parties would be bound to follow the manifesto.”
