Is Every Khan A Muslim? BJP MP Saumitra Khan Has Won from Scheduled Caste Reserved Constituency
India Tomorrow
New Delhi, May 26— News agency IANS flashed a story Sunday morning with this headline “Saumitra Khan lone Muslim face of BJP, community number goes up to 27.” Is Saumitra Khan a Muslim? To verify the claim, IndiaTomorrow.net analyzed the election affidavits of this BJP candidate from West Bengal and other election websites and found the following facts which were ignored in the story.
-- In the election affidavit, Saumitra Khan has declared that he is a “member of Scheduled Caste “Sunri” (excluding Saha) which is a scheduled caste of the state of West Bengal.”
-- Saumitra Khan was elected from Bishnupr (SC) Lok Sabha constituency which is reserved for Scheduled Castes.
-- Saumitra Khan carries his surname from his father Dhananjoy Khan and mother Chhaya Rani Khan. Saumitra Khan’s wife is Sujata Mondal
It is also said that his name is prounced as 'Soumitra Kha' but spelt in English as Saumitra Khan.
A glance at the list of candidates in Bishnupur (SC) constituency reveals that there were some other candidates with 'Khan' surname as most possibly they all were from the same SC caste of Soumitra Khan. Soumitra Khan was pitted against Narayan Chandra Khan of Congress, Sunil Khan of CPI-M besides Sanjit Khan, an Independent. TMC had fielded Shyamal Santra.
Saumitra Khan had won the same seat in 2014 on TMC ticket. He switched over to BJP in January this year and was fieled by the saffron party in the current Lok Sabha polls.
It is a fact Muslims are not included in Scheduled Castes, so no Muslim is allowed to contest from Assembly or Lok Sabha constituencies reserved for Scheduled Castes.
In the current Lok Sabha elections, 27 Muslim candidates have got elected, including six each from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh while Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir have sent three each. Two each have come from Bihar and Assam while one each from Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Lakshadweep, Telangana and Maharashtra.
