Indian Muslims react on Trump's immigration ban order
It is against the international law as well as the Idea of America, say top leaders of Muslims in India
Mumtaz Alam, IndiaTomorrow.net,
New Delhi, Jan 29: Joining the global chorus condemning US President Donald Trump's executive order to ban people from seven Muslim-majority countries, Muslim leaders in India say the order is not just against the international law but also the Idea of America. It is a disturbing indication from a head of state like America, they say.
Immigration ban order against Idea of America
"This hate policy is basically against the Idea of America. We should not forget that what America is today is because of immigration. The identity of America is the identity of immigration," said Navaid Hamid, national president of Indian Muslims' umbrella organization All India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat.
On Saturday, President Trump signed an executive order banning immigrants from seven Muslim countries - Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Libya and Yemen.
Hamid said the reason behind the ban is ‘hollow' as people from the banned countries had no role in the 9/11 terror attacks.
"This is a bigoted policy and it has roots in the Islamophobic temperament of a leader of a great nation which has played a vital role in absorbing the people from across the globe. The reason why trump has banned the entry of citizens from seven countries is hollow. Not a single man from these nations has been responsible for the attacks of 9/11," said Hamid while talking to IndiaTomorrow.net.
Order is shocking, disturbing, will damage image of America
Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, India's largest socio-religious Muslim organization, said the immigration ban order is surprising and shocking from a country like America and it is very disturbing.
"It is very surprising and shocking from a country like America which claims to be a larger democratic country. Such kind of orders clearly mentioning Muslim communities is highly undesirable and highly condemnable in a democratic society and the world which is becoming smaller and people are opening to everyone," said Mohammad Salim Engineer, Secretary General of Jamaat, while talking to IndiaTomorrow.net over phone.
"This kind of statement from head of the state like America is highly disturbing. It is not a good indication - not only for American society but also for the world because this mentality which has been shown to the Muslim community will extend to other areas and faces of life. It is very disturbing and very alarming indication from the president of United States of America," said Jamaat leader and added that it will damage the image of America.
"This will further increase hatred among communities across the globe. It will further damage the image of America which is already not good among Muslim countries and it will further isolate America," he said.
Order is against international law and Constitution of America
Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam, national general secretary of All India Milli Council says Trump's executive order violates international law and Constitution of America.
"It is violation of international law. It will promote discrimination. It is reflection of his hatred against Muslims. To harm Muslims and Islam is part of his policies," says Dr. Alam adding that people of America should come out to stop such discrimination otherwise, he said, it will spread like epidemic putting humanity in danger.
"Now it is the responsibility of the citizens of America to respect the international law and try to stop such kind of discrimination. Because if discrimination begins from there then it will take the shape of an epidemic and will spread like plague across the globe and then Humanity will be in danger," said Dr. Alam.
"This is a very dangerous step taken by Trump and it is an open violation of not just the International law but the Constitution of America itself, which should not happen," he said.
Maulana Syed Arshad Madani, national president of Jamiat Ulama-I-Hind, said the US President should see how his order will affect his own country and the globe.
"It was clear from the day one. He has won the elections speaking hate against Muslims. He should know how it will impact his own country and the world. I think that if the world community protests against it, we should support them. Hatred against Muslims has increased and Muslims are being attacked at places," said Maulana Madani.
Meanwhile, Trump's order has invited sharp reaction both at home and abroad.
Thousands of people have come out on the streets in America protesting against the order. They are protesting outside airports across the country as many immigrants have been detained there.
In response to Trump's immigration ban order, Iran has also barred entry of US citizens. Iran is one of the seven countries whose people have been barred from entering America.
However, Iran's reaction has not got support from Muslims in India.
"That is too much reaction. It will further strengthen Trump's Islamophobia. How many people from America are going to Iran is a bigger question," said Navaid Hamid, national president of Mushawarat.
