New Delhi, March 16: Describing BJP president Amit Shah and Samajwadi party leader Azam Khan as the most "dangerous politicians in the country," historian and author Ramachandra Guha has cautioned that India needs to be vigilant against rising Hindu nationalism.

Speaking at the opening session of five-day literary festival 'Spring Fever' late on Tuesday here, Guha said the country has witnessed rise in Hindu nationalism post Partition and during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

"The rising of Hindu nationalism in the country is not new. It happened immediately after Partition and during Ram Janmabhoomi movement, and both were orchestrated by the Rashtriya Swayamsevek Sangh (RSS). It has severely affected the secular, cultural and political fabric of the country, and I hope that the situation shouldn't escalate to that level," said Guha.

Guha also noted that Hindu fundamentalism is more threatening than Islamic terrorism in India. "The reason is within India, Hindus are 85 per cent. I am terrified at the thought of Hindu majoritarianism, because that is what we were not," said Guha, adding that Islamic terrorism is a dangerous phenomenon in the global scenario.

He said that in the current context, however, Hindu fundamentalism was confined to a few states.

"It hasn't affected states like Karnataka, West Bengal and Maharashtra. However, the trend is worrying in Uttar Pradesh because it is a large state and the stakes are high. And the two most dangerous politicians in India are Amit shah and Azam Khan," he said during the festival hosted by Penguin Random House.

Stressing the need for conservative intellectuals in the country, Guha said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has failed to produce right-wing intellectuals. Calling the BJP as the most anti-intellectual party, he said that Golwalkar was a garden-variety bigot.

"BJP is the most anti-intellectual party and they failed to produce a single scholar in Gujarat after being in power for many years. You can't have spokespersons as Anupam Kher, Praveen Togadia or Smriti Irani, who will only drive discourse further into the mud. As long as the RSS has the role in the political dispensation, you will never get right-wing intellectuals, but you get right-wing ideologists," he said, adding that the RSS is a bunch of "low-level ideologues".

Guha also slammed attack on scholars and universities.

"Scholarship has a place in moulding the consciousness of the nation. The tendency to belittle scholars, scholarships and universities is unfortunate. Though one should not exaggerate how widespread it is, what is happening around JNU is worrisome," said Guha, who is the author of books like 'India After Gandhi', 'Makers of Modern India', 'Patriots and Partisans' and 'Gandhi Before India'.

Referring to the controversy at the Jawaharlal Nehru university, Guha said the situation was not as hopeless as portrayed by media.

"Everyone has their own role. Soldiers have their place and students have their own. The attack on universities is worrisome, but it could be more hopeful, as the interest in books is also increasing. I think media is very Delhi-centric and they tend to distort facts," said Guha, whose new book 'Democrats and Dissenters' will hit the stands in October.

The historian also noted that moderation, dialogues, and compromise have sustained the Indian democracy and would continue to do so in the future.

"We need to be moderate, need to look and understand the problem with a sober head, without reaching the conclusion that it's Hitler and Emergency again," he said.

The young man Guha is neither a soberhead nor a moderate when he does not tolerate people having a different view point and trashes them in the mud. The young jholawalah is still so egocentric that believers with a different view point have no place in his small cocoon of a world he feels he ought to reign supreme with his intellectual prowess.

There is no Hindu fudamentalism. In the name of Secularity the congress and their cronies have been ruining the country to appease the block vote of Muslims and anti-Hindus. It is about the time the majority wakes up Unless the govt is truly secular, Hindus cannot be suppressed

Crocodile tears of the so-called left-liberals are no longer accepted by masses all over world due to their partisan appeasement stands and views! What did Guha like scholars and writers in India, when all minority pandits of Kashmir were ousted by majority group through force, threat, intimidation and violence! In which country majoritarianism is not bad a idea in their political discourse? Europe, America, Asia, Africa, and all continents follow majoritarian principles and its culture? Then how can Indian majority people may be termed as Hindu fundamentalists since BJP won central or state elections basis?

Sir, it is very dad to hear such a politically pedestrian analyses from you. If any low level two pice mother father street politician whose sources of extortion are getting hit said this it would be understandable, but from an Esteemed academician like you, no not acceptable. You break our heart. Sir, please note, before advent of such scamsters like irfan habib romila thapar bipan chandra and rs sharma, all stalwarts like jadu nath sarkar, hc roychowdhury, rc majumdar etc etc were all RIGHT WING ONTELLECTUALS. The highjacking of education by looters and thieves cannot certainly be your fait accompli or alibi for such an analyses of calling Guru Golwalker names. We know you donot share the same intellectual pedigree as the dirty lying Marxist hypocrites..

Dear Mr. Guha, You have observed that Hindu fundamentalism is yet to be felt in Karnataka. However, it is not so. The districts of South Kanara, North Kanara, the Malnad region and parts of Dharwar and Belgaum have provided a mass base for these saffron clad hooligans. The Sri Rama Sene and Hindu Vedike are some these outfits.

Mr. Guha , you are not intellectual , you are bankrupt intellectual. What do you mean by saffron clads. If you don't know keep quite. When you say bad about Saffron colour due to your lack of knowledge or intellect it is like saying bad words to our country and culture which you don't know. Why you are exposing your lack of knowledge. Shame on you!

By demonizing the world's most peace loving community, Guha is doing monumental damage to its image and existence. Sham secular historians overlook the fact that Muslims, Zorastrians, Jews and every other persecuted community found a welcome refuge on our soil, thanks to the magnanimity of its majority community. All Guha has been doing is to paint Hindus as monsters, while the whole world is witness to Jihadi excesses in Iraq and Syria. Fanatical wahabis have been murdering their own co-religionists with impunity in Iraq and Syriaq, particularly if they are Shias and Yezdis. Yet the likes of Guha maintain a deafening silence. Why? If he has an iota of intellectual honesty, then he should be addressing this question, not behaving as an apologist for Congress policies that have ruined the country.

Guha is esteemed as a writer, but here he betrays abyssmal dearth of knowledge about the sinister potency of Violent Islamism. Clearly, he has neglible acquaintance with at menace and the havoc it can wreake in India and it's neighbourhood. As to Hindu nationalism also, the man is grossly mistaken. India is the one country, including so-called Islamic countries, in which Muslims of every sect: men and women, have the greatest extent of freedom, security, and opportunity to grow with dignity. Guha appears ignorant about this simple truth - which truth, incidentally, Indian Muslims are aware of and cherish. One more thing: not just Muslims, but all minorities are safe in India because of time honoured tradition in India of the majority community, the Hindu\'s, to respect diversity and freedom of faith, and religious practice. It is extremely unfortunate that these basic truths are not appreciated by Indian intellectuals belonging to India\'s preachy Left-wing. Their ignorance and/or hypocrisy is a major cause of needless howling and breastbeating. Guha should know better, and should put up or shut up.

Kudos to Ram Chandra Guha for writing a very balance piece. This article is an eye-opener. He has been able to expresses what many of us Indians feel today. I may also add that, love my country, I have always done so, it was a given(isn't that nationalism?). I never thought that I would live to see the day when Indians would have to actually prove their nationalism. That, any criticism of the state or the government could be taken as sedition. Indeed it a scary scenario.
