NEW DELHI, JUNE 10—Nargis Saifi, wife of activist Khalid Saifi, who has been booked by the Delhi Police Crime Branch in connection with the Northeast Delhi riots, has said that the charges levelled against her husband are “fabricated”.

Speaking to India Tomorrow on Wednesday, she said, “All the charges levelled against my husband are fabricated and concocted”.

She became quite emotional while talking about how Khalid was tortured by the personnel of the Jagatpuri Police Station after his arrest on February 25(according to police on February 26) from anti-CAA protest site in Khureji Khas and sustained fractures in both of his legs due to which he could not walk and was brought to the court in a wheel chair in second week of March after expiry of the 14-day police custody. His fractures and injuries have completely healed up now.

“The charges are totally false against my husband. Everyday police is coming up with one or the other new stories cooked up against him. I don’t know why are they doing this?”, she said.

Stating that the police have so far booked him in three cases, she said that why was Khalid being frequently taken out of the Mandoli jail and given in police custody despite coronavirus infection spreading very fast.  She is very much worried about the health of Khalid.

“The dreaded coronavirus disease is not subsiding and increasing everyday. Who will be responsible if my husband gets the infection? Even many police personnel in Delhi are reported to have tested corona positive. Why are police doing all this with my husband? I can’t understand”, she said.

“It has been three and a half months since my husband was arrested. My sons-Yasser Ibrahim (11), Mohammed Taha(10) and daughter Maryam(6)-are missing him badly. For the first time, my children observed Ramzan fasts and celebrated Eid without their father”, she narrated.

“My children are asking me when will 'Abbu' return? I have no reply. I don’t know how to reply them”, she said, with tears flowing down her eyes.

Asked about Khalid’s association with Aam Aadmi Party(AAP), she said that he was associated with AAP since its inception and worked for it even in Punjab and Goa during assembly elections there. But he left the party after founding the United Against Hate, an NGO, through which Khalid worked for communal harmony and brotherhood.

However, she said that he never met former JNU scholar Umar Khalid. Nargis said that it is totally a false allegation that Khalid held meetings with some people in Shaheen Bagh or hatched a conspiracy with AAP councillor Tahir Hussain.

“These are all concoctions. I don’t know why the police are levelling baseless allegations?” she said.

Khalid was among a few activists, including former Congress councillor Ishrat Jahan, who had started anti-CAA protest in Khureji Khas area. When the riots broke out in Shiv Vihar and other places in Northeast Delhi on February 24, police removed the protesters from Khureji Khas as well and arrested Khalid as also Ishrat Jahan, on the allegation that they prevented the policemen from carrying out their official duty by attacking the police party.

Later on, he was charged to have been in touch with AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and Umar Khalid in plotting the Northeast Delhi violence and charges under draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act were invoked against him.

After the police in its chargesheet alleged that Khalid was in touch with AAP’s Tahir Hussain, BJP leaders circulated Khalid’s photos with several AAP leaders as also several media persons. However, no  one shared Khalid’s photos with BJP’s Kapil Mishra when both of them were in AAP. Mishra was a minister in the Delhi government before he joined the BJP.
