New Delhi, 24 July 2014: What Shiv Sena Member of Parliament Baburao Rajan Vichare did with a fasting Muslim staffer at Maharashtra Sadan on 17 July has shocked the nation and earned him huge condemnation from people and political parties across the country. But for him, it was a minor sin as the 52 year-old Lok Sabha Member from Thane in Maharashtra is already accused of committing more serious crimes in the past including rioting and intimidation.

According to his affidavit that he filed with the Election Commission of India for contesting the recent Lok Sabha election, the 10th class pass Vichare is facing 13 criminal cases with 25 different charges.

He is facing 4 charges related to rioting, 8 for unlawful assembly, 2 charges related to assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, 2 charges related to intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace (IPC Section-504) and 1 charge related to criminal intimidation besides other.

Before contesting the Lok Sabha election 2014, he had contested the Maharashtra Assembly election in 2009. In five years, not only the number of criminal cases against him went up, his declared assets also skyrocketed.

In 2009, he had assets worth Rs 2 crore, which rose to Rs 10 crore in 2014

As per his affidavit, at the time of Maharashtra assembly poll in 2009, Vichare was facing 11 criminal cases which went up to 13 in 2014. In 2009, his declared assets were worth more than Rs 2 crore (2,24,20,173). But in the 2014 Lok Sabha poll affidavit, his declared assets are worth more than Rs 10 crores (10,20,91,612). He also carries liabilities worth Rs 1,30,54,217.

Maharashtra Sadan incident

A shameful incident occurred on 17 July at Maharashtra Sadan, the official guesthouse of Maharashtra state in New Delhi. The video footage of the incident was aired on several TV news channels yesterday causing huge uproar in both houses of Parliament and across the country. The video shows Vichare shoving a chapati in the mouth of canteen manager of the guesthouse. Even though the staffer Arshad Zubair was saying he was Muslim and observing fast of Ramadan, the Member of Parliament of Shiv Sena, Maharashtra-based Hindu right political outfit, continued trying to force the chapati in his mouth. The MP was reportedly upset with the poor standard of food served at the guesthouse.

Political parties including Shiv Sena have condemned the incident. Vichare has also reportedly offered apology. Earlier, the Resident Commissioner of Maharashtra Sadan also offered apology to the manager.

Soon after the incident, IRCTC, the Indian Railway subsidiary which was providing catering services to the guesthouse, stopped services in protest against the incident.
